System dynamics is an approach to understanding the nonlinear behavior of complex system over time using stocks, flows, internal feedback loops and delays. A complex system can be viewed as a system composed of many components, which may interact with each other. Systems can be found everywhere, in nature, human relations, economics to name a few. Therefore the possibilities of solving different projects with the methodology are endless. A grate emphasis is placed on analyzing feedbacks and causalities. Feedback occurs when outputs of a system are routed back as inputs as part of a chain of cause and that forms a circuit or loop.
The purpose of the course is that students will be able to understand and apply the basic tools of System Analysis and of System Dynamics Modelling from a practical perspective. Systems Analysis allows you to find out how systems work on a fundamental level. From this, you will learn how to create your own simulation models. In this respect, the course will focus on Ecological, technical, social and economical topics for the ability to solve complex, multidisciplinary problems. However, it will also cite examples of a greater variety, such as epidemical studies, interpersonal communications and group dynamics. The course focuses on the fundamental concepts of system dynamics modelling such as positive and negative feedback structures as well as causal loop diagrams. System dynamics model formulation and simulation is introduced; rate equations and auxiliary equations, delays and graphical converters. Furthermore, policy and sensitivity analysis will be discussed. Practical examples will be analysed both regarding business as well as public policy. For instance, inventory models, epidemics, and the relationship of population dynamics and economic growth will be explored. The software STELLA/iThink and Vensim will be used for solving and constructing the
models.
